Can L-Carnitine Lose Weight?

Sep 16, 2022

L-carnitine, also known as vitamin BT or L-carnitine, is a compound with a variety of physiological functions. Its main function is to transport long-chain fatty acids from outside the mitochondrial membrane to the inside of the mitochondrial membrane in the form of fatty acylcarnitine as a carrier, where B-oxidation is carried out in the mitochondria to generate energy. Due to the lack of carnitine in the body and the disorder of fat metabolism, on the one hand, it will cause insufficient muscle energy supply, resulting in body fatigue and related cardiovascular diseases. On the other hand, it will also cause lipids to accumulate in muscle fibers and the liver, resulting in obesity and fatty liver.

Metabolism of L-carnitine in the body:

The mechanism of L-carnitine is mainly to promote the β-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. Fatty acids are classified into short-chain fatty acids (less than 6 carbon atoms in the carbon chain) according to the length of the carbon chain in the molecular structure. There are three types of medium-chain fatty acids (6-12 carbon atoms in the carbon chain) and long-chain fatty acids (more than 12 carbon atoms in the carbon chain). Among them, medium and short-chain fatty acids not only have no promoting effect on obesity, but some scholars also believe that medium and short-chain fatty acids have weight loss effects. The long-chain fatty acid is the main component of fat. When metabolized in the human body, it enters the human vein through the lymphatic vessels in the form of triglycerides, is transported and stored in various tissues of the human body, and is easy to accumulate to form fat. Therefore, the main purpose of weight loss is to reduce long-chain fatty acids. Long-chain fatty acids must enter the mitochondrial matrix to be oxidized and decomposed, but long-chain fatty acids cannot directly pass through the inner mitochondrial membrane and enter the mitochondria. Therefore, L-carnitine is required as a carrier to transport it into mitochondria for oxidation.

L-carnitine can help reduce fat production. However, it is unrealistic to rely on taking L-carnitine to achieve weight loss, it needs to be combined with a certain amount of aerobic exercise. Is there anything else you want to know?
