What is 5-HTP?


5-HTP is a natural amino acid in the human body and is also the chemical precursor of serotonin.

Research from Duke University in the United States has shown that the use of sustained-release forms of 5-HTP supplements/drugs can significantly improve its safety, stably expose 5-HTP to plasma, and enhance brain serotonin function.


5-HTP usage

5-HTP is used in doses ranging from 20-3250 mg/day. In the treatment of depression, 5-HTP is most commonly used in doses of 200-300 mg/day in 3-4 divided doses.


For ordinary people, the common usage (dose) of 5-HTP is: 25mg/day for the first week, then increase the dose once a week until it increases to 50-100mg/day. Read product labels carefully before using 5-HTP supplements.


Potential side effects of 5-HTP

1. Studies have shown that prolonged use of 5-HTP may worsen the following conditions: ADHD, depression, generalized anxiety disorder, obesity, Parkinson's disease and seasonal affective disorder. Some people recommend taking 5-HTP along with supplements that increase dopamine levels in the body, such as tyrosine and levodopa;


2.Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, sexual problems, nightmares and muscle problems.
