Prickly Pear Cactus Extract Introduction
Prickly Pear Cactus Extract is indigenous to the desert. They have evolved to conserve water in arid and/or hot conditions, which accounts for their unique appearance. The stem of the majority of species has developed into a succulent, photosynthetic structure, while the leaves have turned into spines. Some species are cultivated for food, while many are used as decorative plants.

Prickly Pear Cactus Extract Function
Studies suggest that consuming prickly pear cactus can help lower body fat, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, potentially reducing the risk of conditions like stroke, coronary heart disease, and peripheral vascular diseases.
1. Diabetes
Single doses of prickly pear cactus extract have been shown to lower blood sugar levels by 17% to 48% in some individuals. However, it is unclear whether consistent daily use can maintain this effect on blood sugar levels over time.
2. Enlarged Prostate (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, BPH)
Preliminary research indicates that powdered prickly pear cactus flowers may help alleviate symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as frequent urges to urinate or the sensation of a full bladder.
3. Familial Hypercholesterolemia (Inherited High Cholesterol)
Initial studies suggest that consuming the edible pulp of prickly pear cactus daily for 4 weeks, alongside a recommended diet, can reduce both total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad") cholesterol levels in individuals with inherited high cholesterol.
4. Hangovers
Taking prickly pear cactus extract before drinking alcohol may alleviate some hangover symptoms the following day, particularly nausea, loss of appetite, and dry mouth. However, it does not seem to have an effect on symptoms like headache, dizziness, diarrhea, or muscle soreness.
5. High Cholesterol
Early research indicates that daily consumption of prickly pear cactus, along with a proper diet, may lower total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, and triglyceride levels in individuals with high cholesterol. However, it appears to have no significant effect on high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good") cholesterol levels.
