What is Shikimic Acid?
Shikimic acid, a naturally occurring substance of economic importance, is a precursor of Tamiflu. These days, hundreds of tons of star anise (Illicium verum) are extracted or fermented to make it. Shikimic acid and its derivatives exhibit anti-thrombotic and antiplatelet aggregation effects on the cardiovascular system. Research has demonstrated that shikimic acid strongly inhibits platelet aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate in a rat model of middle cerebral artery embolism. Both intravenous and intramuscular administration of shikimic acid can prolong the blood clotting time in mice.
