Derris Root Powder Introduction
Also known as derris root powder or tuba root (in Indonesia), it was once used as an organic insecticide for crops like peas. However, due to studies showing rotenone's extreme toxicity, derris root powder is now considered unsafe, despite its popularity among organic growers.
When crushed, derris root releases rotenone.
In Fiji and New Guinea, some locals crush the roots and throw them into water to stun or kill fish, which then float to the surface for easy collection. Despite its toxicity, derris is also used as a food plant by Lepidopteran larvae, including Batrachedra amydraula.
