Lutein Ester Introduction
Unlike pure lutein, a lutein ester contains two additional fatty acid molecules. According to studies, lutein ester have a 62% higher bioavailability than pure lutein and are functionally superior. Both the concentration of lutein in the blood and the density of the macular pigment in the retina are increased by lutein esters.
The dried petals of yellow marigold flowers are used to make lutein esters from Tagetes erecta L., a purified extract made with organic solvents. Its main constituent is lutein esters, of which helenien (lutein dipalmitate) makes up the majority. There is also a lesser amount of zeaxanthin esters. A member of the xanthophyll pigment family, Helenien (β,ε-carotene-3,3'-diol dipalmitate) lacks provitamins.
