Rotenone is a colorless to brownish crystalline solid, odorless, and found in the roots of several plant species. It acts as a mitochondrial NADH:ubiquinone reductase inhibitor and toxin. Exposure can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or contact.

1. Rotenone as an Insecticide

Rotenone powder is one of seven naturally occurring chemicals allowed for restricted use in organic farming. It controls pests like aphids, raspberry beetles, and sawflies but is rarely used due to its impact on beneficial species. Unlike synthetic pesticides, rotenone breaks down quickly, posing less environmental risk. It is also used as garden dust and in insecticide shampoos for livestock.

Rotenone is the primary pesticide used to eradicate fish populations, especially invasive species that outcompete native fish.
